Declutter While Teaching Your Kids To Help Others In Need

This week's post is actually an idea and a message.
It is nice to live in a warm house, with food on the table every night, and clothes to keep the cold away. Unfortunately, not everyone shares the same conditions.
With the winter and the holidays around the corner, I started thinking about those two things that go well together: clutter and donations. So why not start the new year with less stuff while helping those in need? You can donate clothes, blankets, and also toys! How great would it be to teach your children about sharing and making others happy?
Start with an explanation that there are kids who don't have toys to play with, and sometimes not even warm clothes to wear in the cold. Sometimes you don't need to say anything else, your kids will offer to give theirs belongings - and that would be awesome! If they don't {most of them don't}, you can "have the idea" and share with them, saying that it would be super cool to help another child to have a merry Christmas ;)
Share the idea of you like it! :)

Professional Organizer - Part II: What Do We Offer?

12/4/2015

Picture
Professional Organizing, as a profession, is still recent. Maybe because of that, most people still don't know what it is, or have never heard about it. Many still think we help only with closets and/or cleaning {get my overview about Professional Organizing here}.
A Professional Organizer's goal is to help the client with the process of letting things go, create new systems to make their lives less complicated and more productive, optimize their time, and make their routine more enjoyable {in the morning while getting kids ready for school, for example}.
It turns out we offer a wide range of services, working in different areas of homes and businesses, and many of us also have a specialty, such as organizing pantries, creating custom closets systems, building photo albums, or supporting those clients with chronic
disorganization, or ADHD/ADD {Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder/Attention Deficit Disorder}.

You may need a P.O. if...
  • You are moving: packing and unpacking are services most of us offer. It is so much easier to get the process of moving done when you hire professional help.
  • You are having trouble keeping track of your schedule: many P.Os help with time management. We can go to your home or office, sit with you, talk about your routine, difficulties, then we make a plan and discuss it with you, working with you to find a solution.
  • You have tons of pictures - no albums: this is a specialty, and I believe the number of Professional Organizers who work with this isn't high {I may be wrong}, but you can find them if you search online. Lisa Woodruff is one I know from Cincinnati, OH.
  • Your office is a mess and you have papers everywhere: most of us work with papers and files, and I actually love organizing mail, magazines, receipts, documents... We can organize your whole office, and after tasting the freedom of working in a tidy space, you won't look back.
  • Your garage does not fit your car anymore: some people keep their car out of the garage as a choice, but some just can't fit it there anymore, because clutter took over. Garages are a "great" space to leave our stuff behind. Bags, old pieces of furniture, broken toys, the decorations for that party 3 years ago... And the list goes on. Many of these are items that you don't need or don't even remember you have. Garages and attics are out of my list of services, but it isn't hard to find Professional Organizers who offer this.
  • You would like to have a tidy kitchen, or bathroom, or bedroom, or master closet: anywhere in your home, we will be there for you.

Living or working in an organized place is so much better. A clear
desk, an organized cabinet where you can find what you need, a closet
where things are visible and easy to reach. There are only pros, no
cons, when it is about living an organized life. And we are here to

help you to get there.

DIY Sunday - Reusing Bottles And Jars

12/1/2015

How about reusing those bottles and jars that would go to the trash, and make some decoration pieces?
Picture
I cover this bottle with coffee filters, using glue mixed with a little bit of water. It is very messy, but worth it! I chose a bottle, but you can apply this wherever you want - boxes, jars, etc. You just need to be patient and start saving the filters way ahead before the day you need the project done.
Just spread the glue on the object, and start applying the filters. Cover them all with glue, then apply the second layer. The bottle needed some details on the edges, so I cut the filters in half.
While applying the filters, cover them with glue to keep them in place and shiny.

This bottle was a very easy project. I used some burlap I found from the $1-$3 section at Target.
Let's say this is a very lazy project. I just folded a piece of the fabric, applyed it around the bottle, and tied it with rope, so it wouldn't fall. Then I used another cut of burlap to make sort of a bow {that didn't work out}, and tied it on the back. I applyed a little glue on the edges, and on the knot just to make sure it will stay this way.
I liked how it turned out, I would just add some color maybe.
Decoupage is the art of decorating objects with paper cut-outs.
Here I am using spice jars, but you can use boxes, bottles, etc. You can pick figures with a theme {like Christmas} or just randon ones {I did both}. You can use catalogs, old gift wrap, etc.
You will need to mix the glue in a little bit of water, and you can use a brush to spread it on the object you are working with {I used my fingers}. Spread the glue, apply the cut-outs the way you like, and cover them with glue so they shine and stay in place. You can also add a cover of one specific color first, and then add the cut-outs if you want.

I used small bottles and yarn to do this project.
Apply the glue to start it. Go round a little bit with the yarn, and the pressure it to make sure it doesn't fall off. Continue applying the glue, then the yarn, always making sure there are no spaces left between them.
Also being careful to not let the glue touch the yarn, or it will be visible.
For this kind of project, you can use the yarn mixing colors and sizes.
I also used rope in another project, since it was a regular sized bottle of wine, which would take more time if I were using the yarn.

These are just a few options you have for Do It Yourself Projects to decorate your home, or give as a present, and be proud of reutilize things instead of buying new ones.
